Cost £250 for a specialist in Rutherglen to replace all the gearbox bearings ("TopGear"). Dropped the car off one night, picked it up the next evening.
You could give them a try:

think you find its yr first motion shaft bearing! inside the gear box, as the revs go up the bearing will spin faster making the noise louder, will be an expensive job if u dont know the right people, and dont leave it like i did it only gets worse.
Smithy has the right idea here,
way to check this is - start up in 1st, get rolling, then put it in neutral and lift your clutch pedal, if u get a whirring, winding/whislting noise, then this could or most likely is the bearings as mentioned above. or could be the clutch release bearing. this is a big job as the engine/gearbox requires lifting. could cost quite a few £££s too, most of that will be labour expense.
edit: as mentioned above, this is a common-ish thing in Honda's not only Civics - only unless its screaming at you then i would be worried.
in the meantime, dont drive it like its stolen
