so you boys think this is a worthwhile project then??

i think ive got my winter planned this year. :(

Do it! Do it! Do it! If only I had a few thousand lying around the place I would do it too!

Actually no id probably put a B18c in my EP2 but sssh....

DO IT!

I always thought that the EP2 was the car that shouldve got the K20a3 engine and the Type-S shouldve got the D16v1...anyone else agree?

yeah. thats me saving up for this.

should be around £1500 supplied and fitted thats including everything from engine to ecu, looms and ancilleries.

my mates a honda geek so he'll be fitting this. he used to work at a honda garage when he was younger so he should know his stuff.

think i might save up a bit extra and buy a full exhaust system for it. speaking of exhuast systems. will a k20 fanny mould fit with in my engine bay. i'm trying to research this as much as possible.

if any one could assist me in making this project a reality please do so.

I live in America where the ep3 came standard with the a3. Let me give you a breakdown on this motor. The a3 has a lower compression than the a2 to begin with. Its like 9.8:1. It uses the same intake manifold (here in the USA) as the rsx-s which sports the a2 from factory. In case you are wondering its a prb manifold. The ports on the head are slightly smaller than the a2 as well so it does not quite flow up to par with the a2 motor. As mentioned before this motor does not use traditional vtec. It is an economy vtec. Below 2200 rpms the intake lobe which is slightly rounded barely opens your valve. So basicly below that rpm range the motor is running as a 12 valve. Also the oil pump on the a3 is not as good as the one on the a2. Finishing up the top end with the already economy based cams lets talk about the valve springs. They will not take much above 8000 rpms before you start floating valves so keep that in mind. As for the crank, it is balanced from factory but it is not counter balanced so revving past 8k rpms reliabley starts to become out of the question. The stock redline on the a3 is 6800 rpms. Thats pretty much it for the a3. If you get on an american forum like what I am also on you will here nothing but trash talk about the a3. I think they are great reliable motors. In the end you will not be able to make the power of an a2 but compared to what you are making with the d16 it will be an upgrade for sure. Im currently running an aem cold air intake with an obx race header mated to an rsx-s midpipe and oem ep3 axleback. Very quick car and fun to drive. Best of all its not too obnoxiously loud.

Also I forgot to add. Tuning on the a3 here in America has come a long way. There are a lot of guys now running an oem vtec killer cam setup. You have to have kpro for this to work but its freaking awesome. Basically what you do is take the cams out of a k20a2 and put them in the a3 where the rocker rides on the vtec lobe at all times. You have to switch out your a3 intake rockers for a3 exhaust rockers. With kpro you run the a2 program and set your vtec to enguage above your redline. In other words so it wont engage because you are riding on that lobe at all times. As long as you have kpro this is a very cheap upgrade and can be done for 200-300 dollars. The great part tho is the average power output of this setup with full bolt ons is right at 200whp.

So basically it's running on VTEC all the time? I bet that does away with the gasoline :hmm:

I wonder if you could do something like this to the D16V1, since it uses the same economy style VTEC system like the K20A3.

Hmmmmm not sure how you could pull that off seeing as the d series are economy vtec and a sohc. Your best bet would be an upgraded cam. The only reason you can pull this off with the a3 is because you have the true vtec cams from the a2 to swap into the a3. Im sure you could figure something out tho. Maybe find a more agressive oem d series cam and then possibly change out the rockers. Either way tho you would have to have some sort of engine management to make this work.

£1000 to have it supplied and fitted? Is this complete with gearbox, ECU and all ancillary components?
At the very least you will need new engine mounts and drive shafts as the D16V1 is located the other way round. Is the mechanic aware of the the work required?

*edit*

Oops, my bad. Just saw your later post. ;)

If you can get it for that price, go for it! ;)

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but what was the outcome on this? Did it get done? Is it a good idea?

doogie has an EM1 now...if its the guy i'm thinking of!

tbh...its not really worth doing unless you want to run your mouth saying you've got a tuned K20A3...which to me just says that you couldn't afford the outlay for an A2 or an A....
