Will a Type R exhaust system fit an ep4. The system is the standard cat back.. Or would the backbox fit on its own without having to modify the hangars or inlet pipe?

I have to ask...

Why?

It's a diesel so will have comletely different charcteristics to a Type R, for a start the diesel cat is completely different in every way to a petrol cat (diesel cats work with a particulate filter which over time clogs up, this is then backflushed and the ash burnt by the ECU injecting more fuel than normal into the engine so exhaust gases are burning through). The backbox will be designed with entirely higher pressures in mind so all you are going to gain will be looks. I'm not even sure what the sound would be like either, if you're honest with yourself the Isuzu lump is pretty agricultural sounding, I dread to think what could happen.

If you want a decent backbox or exhaust system pay the money and get one designed for the purpose. Diesels are completely different beast, same rules do not apply...

I know that it would serve very little if any performance purpose at all on a diesel. It was going to be purely for styling.

you might end up losing power as i know turbo's require bigger bore exhausts, i would go custom and that way at least they will inform you of the best size piping to cope with the backpressure

just straight through it. you dont need a cat a diesel and the back box just reduced noise as usual. If it doesnt smoke, it'll go through its mot.

EP4's have a completely differant shape exhaust system then an ep3, dad wanted a ep3 backbox on his old ep4.

With regards to cats/dpf's, you need to keep the cat for an mot on anything post 2001 on a diesel, most of the 306 guys i know decat theres, its just the really late ones that need to have a cat for the mot, although going off my emissions it would probably still pass with a decat on emissions wise, but fail because its missing.

With regards to a backbox, Im going to just have a straight pipe made up as i have on my 306, keep the centre box in for a bit of silencing then just a straight pipe at the back, then Im going to have an oval trim put on the end. 306 is like this and its still nice and quiet, but makes a nice whistle on boost. Basically on a diesel you want as little back pressure as possible, the turbo alone does a good job of silencing the car, so you can get away with having a straight pipe with no boxes, apart from they changed the mot to say a car must have a silencer in good condition.

Hope that clears a few things up.

Just to add to the box bit.. few people are running straight pipes on their 306's now, one lad got stopped and basically got told off as it was illegal as he had no silencer... so he got gil old backbox gutted it, and welded it over his straight pipe as a fake box.... police where fine when they stopped him again :)
