After the last few days of snow all the main roads and motorways have been gritted. Today my car was filthy to I took it to the petrol station and jet washed it. After that I decided to top up the washer fluid and when I opened the engine bay it was filthy, there were white water spots and dirt everywhere, the engine bay looks like its from an old banger!
The engine bay looks horrible and needs to be cleaned asap but Im not sure how to do it as I am worried I might damage the electronics...

How do you clean the engine bay?

damp cloth and wipe it down, dont go spraying water everywhere. or ask a company how much to steam clean, honda done mine when i bought the car, its been cleaned once since then but only the bits you can see lol.
i use that AG vinyl rubber cleaner stuff. it looks good afterwards, mine is so dirty and dusty too.

Quick once over with a damp (NOT dripping wet) sponge (usually the one I do the wheels with) then a quick once over with an old chamois and if I'm feeling like making it look shiny for a show or the like then I use some glossy dash-wipes on the rubber/plastic bits and glass-wipes on stuff like the engine covers and any of the dressup bits I've got fitted.

I cleaned mine when i fgirst got it but with being a car valetor we do them all the time. the way we do it is to use a TFR (Traffic film remover) can be bought from halfords or any paint shops. just dont use it on anything that has been sprayed red or it turns it a nice whitey pink colour. after that just use a pressure washer on about 90 degrees with the engine running. we normally have somone sat in the car idling it at 2000rpm just to keep the revs high enough so that it wont die anyway. then give it a dry and a tart up with plastic conditioner.

don't go buy stuff
i did it on the Dutch way!
* Use WD40 (penetrate oil wich you use when you work on your car)
* Brush to apply it
* cockpitspray and a cloth to wipe off the plastic parts like airbox and stuff
minimum cost, maximum performance

Like nasty said, use some WD40 with a brush and a cloth
Afterwards you can still use meguiars (or some onther make) engine dress up to keep it clean
