Just curious really...

I'd like a CAI on my car.. but would love to attempt a design of my own....

I'm not saying im 100% going to do it, just curious really if it was to be done...

1) What material would be best? Would Exhaust piping be ideal?
2) What sort of Diameter should i aim for? I see some Fat ones, and some normal sized piping? Is there one that is specific for certain things?

Think thats my only questions for now

For material I'd go with something fairly well insulated, plastics and such are much less conductive than metals. Forget stuff that is rough, you want a nice smooth finish inside for the best performance (however negligible a gain is still a gain).

Working with your current air box would probably be a good move, paper filters are better as long as you keep on top of them and it means you can easily mess about.

As for a scoop or whatever, my money would be on fibreglass or carbon fibre if you can find some to work with but both will be costly (in initial outlay and time). The reward though would be a decent scoop that you can design around cheap components, once you've made a mould you could fire one or more out again (see where this is going?) with relative ease.

Cheers mate,

I appreciate the reply.

I've been researching it and make sure i know what to aim for before i start a project. I'm doing it for Fun really.

Going to try to make it cheaper than the usual ones you can like AEM etc. I will get it painted etc afterwards so it looks the business!

Does anyone know the material normal Cold Air Intakes are made off?

The AEM and K&N CAI's are both made from mandrel bent Aluminium piping.

How about getting a 2nd hand BMC CDA as i did? You can attach it to your throttle body using the various adaptors, straights and bends that are available off the shelf, then make the necessary cold air feed using some aluminium ducting.

With all my cars i've designed my own air intakes. With my EP2 i just opened my resochamber, and replaced the restrictive plastic tube by an unrestrictive inox tube, getting air in the room beneath the headlight.
Very noticable result for 20pounds :)

did you just drill a bigger hole in it?

i have bought a K&N panel filter aswell??

did you use a biger diameter air intake hose?

First you have to cut the resobox open, just use a fine saw

i've used an 63mm inox tube. Fits perfectly in the upper airbox rubber gasket, and you don't need to modify the resobox holes a lot.

Actually if you buy 2 x 90degree bends of 63mm, and 1 63mm coupler, that's enough!

I've bought an Intake funnel for extra flow on ebay as well, didn't cost much.

With normal driving it sounds like oem, even on the driveway. But the throttle response improved a lot, and the induction roar with full throttle is amazing

and all this for 20 pounds

1: Aluminium or stainless steel or PP hard plastic pipe. do not use soft plastic flexible pipe.
2: search calculator for the intake pipe, Too big is too big, too small is too smal if you want to gain HP. What you wan't to do CAI, HAI or modify OEM intake box.
Intake pipe uses intake pulse's which comes from engine intake. Intake pipe diameter can be calculated from engine size, valve lift size and so on this this figure's for the calculator you find i here or car's engine specifications info.

You can do intake like style i think this is good, it is not fatal but if you wan't to do it good and working intake look for calculator.

I took some pictures of my custom intake

i noticed a clear increase in low and midrange torque, and the sound became a lot louder in vtec.

I didn't want to spend 100's pounds on aftermarket intakes so i designed one, that i think performs as well. If u sort it all out, it HAS to increase performance, because all i did was to get the restrictions out, and retain the same diameter as the stock intake.
In that case i'd like to spend money in this, instead of cheap-ass ebay induction kits wich in some cases even decreases the performance of the civic.

Didn't want to offend anyone, just my 2 cents

yea thats look fine but i cant see the filter
did you left the standard filter or just put in sport replacement
i have basicly same thing done but i have used alu flexible k&n pipe 60mm from ebay and get rid of std filter, new one (pipecross foam cone) its just beside battery verry close to the headlight where is the hole to catch up more cold air
(will do pics and post later)
i would say this will give you better results (but not in sound coz its very quiet and only hear sometimes compare to exhaust ;)

i opted for qualilty stuff, so i bought inox tubes for 12€ each. and a coupler for 5€

but you can also take a flexible one, like the one above, but the flow will be more restrictive
